Chains 9 Speed
9 fold chains are the standard today on many modern bikes. In combination with a 3 fold crank fitting, the cyclist has a choice of 27 gears, although it does not make sense to make use of all of these due to the inclination of the chain. This still makes chain gearshift the most efficient form of gear changing which is highly effective in power transmission. Unlike previous chain models (7/8 fold) 9 fold chains have to be much thinner. To be able to accommodate nine sprockets on the free hub body, the intervals between the individual sprockets need to be reduced. Thinner chains are however more sensitive and react with significantly more wear and tear to usage and weather erosion. Therefore a 9 fold chain needs even more maintenance then other chains, if it is to have a good service life.
