Cranks & Inner Bearings
“Cranks” refer to the pair of levers which, in conjunction with the pedals, transfer drive force from the rider to the inner bearings. The right crank features crank spokes onto which one, two or three chainrings can be mounted. The rider's pedalling force is transferred to the rear wheel through the chainring, chain and sprocket. Crank fittings may be made from steel, aluminum or carbon. Cranks made cast, forged or CNC-milled aluminum are the most popular varieties. A good crank must be stiff and durable since very high tensile and compressive forces act on its levers. The more torsion-resistant a crank is, the more efficient it will be at transferring pedalling force into crank propulsion, and the longer its inner bearing will last, since less torsion force acting on the pedal and inner bearing means less slackness in the ball bearings. This is why a new type of connection between the crank and inner bearing has been developed in recent years. Today, cranks and inner bearings often no longer interlock on a square shaft, but are connected with one another on a splined shaft. The results are astonishing: not is it is possible to construct cranks and inner bearings which are might more lightweight, but the crank arms can be made to be significantly stiffer, and the inner bearings much more durable.
