Cleats, i.e. the small components attached to the sole of the bike shoe, are worn out most frequently. However, you can ride for several years with the same cleats depending upon how far you ride. If clicking in and out becomes noticeably more difficult, it is time to change your cleats. Furthermore, adapter plates for various manufacturers are available in this section, so that shoes and pedals can be combined with one another according to preference.
