Stems & Steerers
“Stem” refers to the connection piece between the handlebar and fork shaft which allows for handlebar adjustment with respect to both height and angle of deflection. A stem must to stable enough to withstand the relatively high compressive and torsional forces acting on it. For instance, if the ground is covered in potholes or roots, the driver's weight will result in a very high strain on the stem/steering unit. The same is true of compressive and tensile forcing acting on the handlebar during off-the-saddle riding. In order to guarantee the necessary level of stability, stems are typically constructed from steel, aluminium or carbon. Steel stems are relatively heavy, but less expensive. Aluminum stems, particularly of the forged variety, combine high stability with low weight. More expensive, but even lighter and more stabile yet are stems made from carbon, which are typically used for racing bikes and high-end mountain bikes. In order to make sure the stem/steering unit rotates in the frame, a steering system (ball-bearing) must be built in as well. Various systems are available, and in recent years the A-head steering setup has become very popular. The higher the quality of the steering system, the better suited it is to minimise wear and tear. Multi-sealed industrial bearings represent the optimal solution.
