Suspension Forks, Mountain Bike Forks

Bicycle forks are available either as rigid forks or suspension forks. Rigid forks made from aluminum or carbon are the favourite in the world of racing and triathlon. They feature relatively modest damping properties, but lightweight and extremely stiff construction. Those seeking more comfort and control, first and foremost trekking cyclists and mountain bikers, can choose from a wide variety of suspension forks. Relatively simple models are available which use elastomeres and steel springs to absorb bumps for a more pleasant and safer ride when off-roading or travelling on rough terrain. Some cyclists who demand more from a suspension fork may opt for air suspesion forks, which are more lightweight, or more robust steel suspension forks, both of which offer a wide range of adjustment possibilities. Depending on the desired area of use, the cyclist should familiarise himself with the spring deflection he needs from the fork. Forks with a spring deflection than 120 mm are primarily recommended for alpine paths and steep downhills, jumps and extreme riding styles. For cyclists who prefer something quick and lightweight, we recommended a more moderate deflection of 100 mm. Because the greater the spring deflection, the more the steering angle changes, as does the weight of the fork. Uphill rides can quickly become torturous unless you opt for an adjustable-level suspension fork. Simply lowering the fork while riding can help a cyclist avoid the disadvantages of a long-stroke fork when travelling uphill while still enjoying the comfort of spring deflection reserves on steep downhills.
