Wheels & Hubs
Anything related to the front or rear wheel of a bike is known as its wheelset. The most common type is a spoked wheel, consisting of hub, spoke, fittings and rim. The most important component of a wheel is its middle piece, or hub, which rotates around the axis, which is in turn securely clamped to the dropouts. The hub serves as the link that connects the wheel with the tyre, and it is connected to the rim by the spokes. The trick to creating a stable yet flexible wheel is to distribute external pressure on all the spokes so that each individual one is responsible for only a fraction of the load, and to keep the hub in the exact midpoint of the wheel at at all times. The factors determining the stability of a wheel are its spoking technique and number of spokes. In general, the more spokes a wheel has, the more stable it is. However, variations in rim profiles allow for some rims, such as hollow section rims, to feature far fewer spokes. This type of rim is highly stiff yet lightweight, so it boasts excellent acceleration performance.
