Which bike lock's right for you?

When you're bike's an integral part of your life, the last thing you want is to come out of work or an evening at the gym to find your lock cut and your bike was gone! As bike-stealing technology gets more advanced and heavy-duty, so must the locks. Have a read of the Bikester bike lock guide to better understand which type's right for you.

MasterLock produces a variety of styles, the most popular being:

Deciding on the level of security you need as well as how much extra weight you want to carry on your bike are key components to consider when making your choice.

Chain type locks

Chain-style locks often allow you to set a four-digit combination instead of having to carry around a key. They're made of hardened steel which resists sawing and sport protective nylon covers.

The Master Lock Street Cuff is an ingenious lock that's compact and light, with a handcuff style design. It's made of hardened steel and coated with ABS. The chain link design offers maximum protection without the weight of other chain-type locks.

Cable type locks

Cable-style locks are a lightweight alternative to chain ones. Many cyclists who want extra security will combine cable and U-locks to protect both the wheels and the body of the bike. Master Lock offers a variety of different cable-style locks — varying in thickness and with the options of key locked or combination locked. The steel braided design of this style lock is cut-resistant and the vinyl coating protects them from the elements.

Cables are great as their lightweight, yet they don't offer the highest level of security and anti-cut technology when compared to Master Lock's chain and U-locks.

U-locks

A bike courier, or someone who wants to keep their racer ultra-light, will often opt for a small but strong U-lock with a bike mount to store it on whilst riding. Master Lock U-locks are constructed of hardened steel which resists cuttings tools and boasts disc lock cylinders that prevent cracking under force.

They offer a range of different U-locks in various sizes and some come with a cable to add an extra layer of security and further deter bike thieves.

Lock accessories and mounting parts

It's a good idea to use a lock mount to transport your lock whilst you're riding. Master Lock offers universal mounts for their cable and U-locks. These can be easily attached to the seat post and are adaptable to the width of the lock.

They also offer strong tightening rubber which can be used to fix locks to a rack securely and safely whilst riding.

As you can see, Master Lock have you covered with a whole variety of locks in varying strengths, styles and materials. The safety and security of your bike is their main aim when designing their expert locks.
