Leg warmers
Leg warmers can extend the cycling-short season by a few weeks. They provide thermal protection for the legs while remaining fully breathable and can be removed in a few easy steps and stored in the jersey when no longer needed. The tight fit and a rubberized finish on the thigh generally ensure a sufficiently secure fit. Preformed legwarmers consisting of several segments, usually offer slightly better support. Generally, the legwarmers have a short zipper at the foot end, so that they can be put on and taken off even with cycling shoes. Some manufacturers also add reflective elements on the back, which is doubly practical as spring or autumn rides can easily start and end in poor light.

Leg warmers - essential items for every cyclists' wardrobe

British weather is famous for being unpredictable: beautiful, sunny mornings can often quickly turn into chilly, rainy afternoons. And we’re not only talking about spring and autumn – the summer can also present its own unexpected meteorological challenges! For this reason, having exactly the right cycling clothing in your wardrobe for every eventuality is extremely important. Like their close relatives arm warmers, leg warmers are among the most versatile items of cycling clothing you can buy. A pair of leg warmers enables you to have the best of both worlds: added warmth for when it’s a cooler or while you’re warming up and quick and easy to remove when you’re a bit warmer. They’re also light enough to stuff into any jersey pocket. If you often ride in the mountains, leg warmers come in extremely handy – perfect for keeping your legs warm on long, fast descents. Additionally, some leg warmers are designed with sun protection in mind and are perfect for protecting your legs on very hot, sunny days.

Different types of leg warmers

Conventional leg warmers are designed to offer full-leg coverage when worn in conjunction with a pair of bib shorts. Starting mid-thigh, tucked under your bib shorts, leg warmers stretch right down to the ankles. A smaller number of calf and thigh warmers are also available, usually offering a tighter compression fit to support and stimulate particular muscles.

Features, fit & fabrics

Leg warmers are, by design, simple items. More expensive models feature multi-panel construction, while cheaper variants are more commonly made of only a single piece of material. Look for models with an ergonomic ‘bent knee’ design – this allows better freedom of movement and increases comfort. Some more expensive models have a waterproof coating, though most can be sprayed later with a hydrophobic coating for rain protection. Some manufacturers also opt for zips at the ankles to aid putting on and taking off, while others prefer to keep their designs simpler. Both designs can work equally as well. Most leg warmers feature silicone grips at the thigh (and often ankle) to keep them in place and prevent slippage. Fit should be tight without being uncomfortable. As a rule of thumb, go for the same size as your bib shorts, although always follow the manufacturer’s sizing advice in the product description. Much like arm warmers, most leg warmers are made from a hybrid of man-made fabrics like polyamide, polyester and elastane – or what you might recognise as lycra. These fabrics are simultaneously warm, breathable, quick-drying and lightweight. Note when ordering that some manufacturers offer leg warmers in different thicknesses.
