Whilst you’re looking for a bike helmet, you’ll come across two different types: the open face bike helmet and the full face helmet.

The open bike helmet

For MTB and road cycling, an open face bicycle helmet or ‘lid’ is often preferred. It usually consists of a shell, called a micro-shell, with a protective layer of plastic and EPS foam on the inside. The plastic layer on the bicycle helmet prevents from abrasions during falls. Many open face helmets, such as those from Giro Indicator, come with a detachable visor, an advanced fit system like the Acu Dial II system for adjusting the helmet to your head shape and built-in insect protection. A micro-shell bicycle helmet has a skeletal design, which creates large openings for ventilation. Despite this simple-looking design, this kind of bike helmet offers optimum safety, comfort, ultra-light weight and an ideal fit.

Full face helmets share a similar protective micro shell construction and ventilation openings to open bike helmets. However, where they differ is that this shell extends down over the rider’s ears and jaw. These are the most protective types of helmets and are preferred by MTB riders in disciplines such as enduro and downhill. They feature large visors which protect your eyes from sun, rain, mud and low-hanging branches. Unsurprisingly, as they provide more coverage they tend to be heavier and hotter options than open bike helmets – but they are worth it for the extra protection they provide on the trails. Some models also offer the possibility to change the inner padding for added comfort and fit adjustment.
