Downhill helmets – full-face protection for extreme trails
Downhill riders face a serious risk of injury riding trails with very steep passages and big jumps. Therefore, they need special helmets. At almost all races and in most bike parks a full-face helmet is a must. A chin guard additionally protects the face in case of an impact. When buying a helmet, you should not only pay attention to the fit but also the ventilation and weight. All helmets we sell adhere to strict safety and construction standards.

Picking the right protective gear

Wearing the right apparel for your chosen sport is essential when protecting yourself from injury. Particularly adventurous cyclists are apt to ride on difficult or dangerous trails, often biking downhill at breakneck speeds. This where our range of downhill & fullface helmets comes in.

Open-face vs full-face MTB helmets

Picking a helmet should always depend on your type of sport. For mountain bikers who enjoy cycling on well-worn trails at modest speeds, a half-shell or open-face helmet offers adequate protection. Downhill cyclists, however, face the risk of injuring themselves seriously every time they speed downhill. Moreover, the risk of injuring their face is much higher, potentially spelling serious damage or even death. A full face MTB helmet covers the whole skull and comes with an additional chin guard designed to protect the face in case of an accident. These helmets adhere to strict safety and construction specifications while also keeping comfort and style in mind. Most riders also choose to pair their helmet with eye goggles that shield their eyes from flying insects, dust and other debris that may impede their performance.

Benefits of downhill & fullface helmets

Fullface helmets are slightly more cumbersome than their lighter counterparts so riders may initially feel they are a bit heavy, but this is a small price to pay for the added protection. Most of the helmets also come with removable accessories such as mosquito nets to prevent accidental swallowing of insects, removable chin straps and reflectors. These types of helmets are also ideally suited for cold weather, meaning that you can venture out even on the coldest days! Meanwhile, though some cyclists might initially be a bit worried about ventilation, most of our helmets come with excellent breathability that is not compromised by their robust style.

At Bikester, safety is our top priority, so we only stock helmets of the highest quality. So if you're looking to purchase the epitome of protective headgear, don't forget to check out some of our best-selling brands, including Fox helmets and O'Neal fullface helmets. Aesthetics are not forgotten either, and you will find a pleasing assortment of stylish helmets to suit your liking, whether you are looking for dangerous black, vibrant orange or a sleek piece of headgear to accompany you on your latest favourite trail.

How should a full face mountain bike helmet fit?

Investing in the right fullface MTB helmet demands careful consideration. This is because helmets that do not fit well will not protect you properly if you have an accident. When you try on your helmet, it should not be uncomfortably tight but hug your face in a manner that feels snug. If the helmet moves when you move your head back and forth, it is too big. If it feels uncomfortably tight, then it is too small.

Before you do that, however, make sure that you are buying the right size. Helmets are usually available in large, medium or small, so it's important that you know your head diameter before starting to browse. If you fall somewhere between two sizes, you can opt to add some extra padding to ensure a perfect fit.
