Kids helmets - protect your little ones
Children's heads need special protection. So that they get into the habit of wearing a helmet, it's best to start with a suitable children's model. Almost all manufacturers today offer helmets adapted and designed for children's heads. These range from the small city helmets with fun motifs to mini versions of those worn by mum and dad. All children's helmets in our range are tested according to the same strict standards as the helmets for adults and offer reliable protection. However, it's essential to find the right fit. Just like with bikes, it's better to buy a helmet that fits rather than one to "grow into", because only when the helmet fits correctly will it protect adequately.

Kids Helmets for Protecting Your Child’s Head

Kids Helmets

Helmets are arguably the single most important piece of protective gear you or your child can wear every time they get on a bike. The best way to get your child into the habit of wearing a helmet is to start them young – which is why we carry a huge range of kids and junior helmets.

Fitting a Kids Helmet

The best place to start when choosing a helmet for your kid is to figure out what size they need. Helmets are typically sized by head circumference, which you can measure by running a string above both ears and across the widest part of your child’s forehead. It’s important to choose a helmet for your child that fits right now – not one that their head will grow into over the next few years. If you do want to size up, or if your child is between two available helmet sizes, they’ll need to wear a hat or something else to fill the extra space every time they put on the helmet. Many helmets come with pads for exactly this purpose. Similarly, it’s essential that you replace your child’s helmet once they outgrow it. The helmet should sit low on the forehead. If, as your kid grows, the helmet can’t fit seamlessly over the widest point of their head, it’s time to replace the helmet.

Choosing a Kids or Junior Helmet

While it’s essential to get a helmet that fits, there’s a lot more that goes into choosing a helmet for your child that they’ll actually want to wear every time they get on their bike.

Style

The best way to entice your child to wear their helmet is to get one that they like. Involve your child in the process of picking out a helmet – find a model that comes in their favorite color or that they think will look good on them. Keep in mind that you can use a road bike helmet for mountain biking and vice versa, if your child thinks that one type of helmet looks better than the other.

Vents

One of the biggest complaints that kids have about wearing their helmet is that it gets too hot during the summer. Choosing a helmet with plenty of ventilation can eliminate this common issue. Road bike helmets tend to offer the greatest degree of ventilation, although many mountain bike helmets also have vents to help circulate air through the helmet.

MIPS

MIPS – Multi-impact Protection System technology is now prevalent in adult helmets, but it’s only now starting to make its way into kids bike helmets. MIPS technology is designed to help protect against concussion by reducing the rotational forces experienced during a crash. These helmets tend to be significantly more expensive than traditional helmets. In addition, the jury is still out on whether MIPS technology is actually effective at reducing injuries during bike crashes. But, if you want your child to be extra protected, look for a kids helmet with MIPS technology.
