Rain jackets: find the best waterproof jacket for cycling!
A quality rain jacket should be part of every serious cyclists’ wardrobe. We’ve all been there: you’re out riding when suddenly the clear blue sky fills with dark clouds, and before you know it the rain comes bucketing down. Nobody likes this, but with at least with the right clothing you can prevent yourself from getting soaked through to the bone in a downpour.
Rain protection for cyclists has come a long way from the humble ponchos and basic, poorly-ventilated and barely-waterproof jackets of days gone by. Nowadays, cycling rain jackets are made from breathable material that offers excellent rain protection, are lightweight, comfortable and often very affordable.
There’s a rain jacket available for all types of cycling. To bring you up to speed on exactly what’s out there, we’ve detailed the various styles below, together with a little something about the materials used.
Different types of rain jackets
- Rain jackets for road riding are cut slim, sitting close to the body to avoid excess material flapping around in the wind. Features are minimal: hems and cuffs with rubber-lining or elastic to prevent slipping, and one or two (usually zippable) pockets for valuables. As per usual with tops for road riding, rain jackets have an extended back and arms with a slightly shorter front, designed for a head-down, sporty riding position. We stock many excellent road cycling rain jackets from Gore Wear, Castelli and Assos among other brands.
- If you’re looking for a rain jacket for mountain biking, you can expect a looser cut than a road jacket. Mountain biking rain jackets have features such as hoods, velcro cuffs, drawstring waists and front pockets. You’ll find excellent mountain biking rain jackets from brands such as Endura, Vaude, Race Face and Fox in our selection.
- Rain jackets for everyday riding and commuting are designed to fit comfortably over your everyday clothes and have features such as adjustable cuffs, drawstring waists, reflective elements, front pockets and hoods. Many jackets also have a slightly extended back to benefit a more forward riding position.
A little about materials
Waterproof jackets for cycling are made from man-made materials such as polyamide (or nylon), polyester and polyurethane, with the fabrics carefully engineered to let moisture out but not in. Often, several layers of material are used, with each layer performing its own role: wicking moisture, wind-proofing or protecting you against rain. Be aware that some jackets are just thin ‘shells’, while others are more substantial. Look for ‘taped seams’ in the product description - this stops rain seeping through the stitching.
Most jackets will be further treated with a waterproof coating that’s applied to the jacket’s outer surface. This prevents it from becoming saturated, although may need to be reapplied after some time. Pay close attention to the material mix and features when buying a rain jacket and always read the description carefully before buying.
