Bikester tests: CASIO PRO TREK SMART WSD-F21HR

A sporty type that you’re likely to find at the gym, out on a morning run or on his bicycle, our purchasing manager Henri Schwarz was the ideal candidate to test Casio's sporty WSD-21HR Pro Trek smartwatch. Henri and his team ensure that Bikester always has the ideal product selection for our customers, so practical knowledge and experience with the products we sell is therefore very important to him. Henri, an electronics enthusiast, also already has experience with other comparable sports smartwatches; let’s see what he thought of Casio’s flagship model.

"If you're a runner, hiker or cyclist, this watch is sure to meet your expectations."

First Impressions

The nice packaging capably and securely protected the watch, as is typical with most expensive modern electrical products. The first thing about the watch that struck me was its size; it did seem on the bigger side, although this didn’t bother me. However, if you are planning on wearing the watch day in, day out, you may have problems fishing it out of a longer jacket sleeve. So, a larger watch, and thus a larger 1.32” colour display with a number of functions dedicated to various outdoor activities.

The watch in action

I used the watch for various activities – on the bike commuting to work, on a 10 km run and during intense 4 km running intervals. To get the most out of the watch, you need to have a Google account. Alternatively, you can install Range Finder to create and load routes. The watch has a lot of attractive applications and functions – in particular the pulse monitor, activity screens and offline maps, which work very well and offer a number of cool features like a compass and a barometer with its own altimeter. In addition, it’s easy to access desired settings or functions on the watch. The watch worked very well for jogging. Only while doing intervals should you pay attention when saving your workouts – here you have to tap the screen to save instead of using a button on the side as on other comparable watches . The watch registers and displays data well, however, with gloves on, it can be a little fiddly to operate the screen. The Casio operating system allows you to install external applications, such as a sleep monitor. Casio states in the specifications that under normal use the watch can operate for up to 1.5 days with a fully-charged battery. Under intensive use, I got between 8 and 12 hours out of the watch.

In Conclusion

This smartwatch is great for training or outdoor activities, although for slimmer wrists it could feel a bit big. If you're a runner, hiker or cyclist, this watch is sure to meet your expectations. It is, however, important to note that this watch uses an operating system based on Google’s Wear OS, so if you're already registered with Google, you're pretty much ready to go. Otherwise, you’ll need to sign up to be able to use this software.
