Bikester tests: Garmin Edge Explore
Garmin Edge Explore: a bike computer for more than just cycling
First impression: setting up the device was child's play
I was instantly impressed as I started unpacking: the packaging is very simple and can be easily separated and recycled. Mounting the device on the bike was also quick and easy. As I’d already been using a different Garmin, setting up the device was child's play. But even if you don't have any previous experience, navigating the menus is very intuitive: you can access all the typical functions quickly and easily, not least thanks to the touch screen. Only the Bluetooth connection to the smartphone was a bit finicky to set up at first, but I eventually got it working.
Practical test: taking the Edge Explore out of its comfort zon
In order to really challenge the device, I tested it in several different situations. First, I used it to record my commute to the office. Depending on my mood and the weather, this can be anywhere between 15 and 20 kilometres, even with temperatures around zero and light rain. At the weekend I brought the Edge Explore with me on several longer rides through nearby woods, where I followed previously planned tours with its help. I also wanted to take the Garmin out of its comfort zone and see how well it worked for other sports. I therefore decided to bring it with me on some skiing tours. For this, I found the included holster very practical, as with it I could simply attach the Edge Explore to the shoulder strap of my backpack. While the device recorded every metre of my tour, I also kept an eye on the remaining altitude metres. On one occasion, the display briefly gave up, although it was extremely cold (far below zero). However, the recording continued in the background and after a short time everything worked perfectly again.
Conclusion: the perfect device for me
The Garmin Edge Explore was undoubtably a great upgrade from my older bike computer. The display was pleasantly large and easy to read in all lighting conditions, the touch screen worked flawlessly even in the rain and with gloves – and made the device much easier to use. Routes can be created easily and then adjusted on the fly, should you for example want to spontaneously shorten the route. The Garmin Edge Explore was perfect for my needs. For commuters and adventure cyclists who want reliable navigation from their GPS bike computer, want to record their tours or also want to control a few other devices such as lights, this device is a very attractive option for the price.
If you, on the other hand, want detailed information about your training at a glance, or plan long off-road mountain biking tours, you might want to look for GPS bicycle computers with a wider range of functions.
