Brooks Leather and Cambium

Brooks uses two different materials in its saddle lines: leather and cambium. Leather is the tried and true staple of Brooks and a popular choice for long tours. The reason is that when it comes to comfort, there’s simply no substitute for leather. After a short break-in period, leather moulds to you and lasts for decades of touring if treated properly. The only real downside to leather is that the rate of wear will increase from getting it wet. Brooks introduced cambium, a type of vulcanised rubber, just six years ago. This material is more expensive than leather, but it’s also impervious to rain and doesn’t require a break-in period. Mountain bikers and road cyclists appreciate the maintenance-free nature of Brooks’ cambium saddles, although the comfort doesn’t reach quite the same level as comparable leather seats.

Brooks Saddle Line-up

Brooks saddles are differentiated by width. Cambium saddles fall into the C13, C15, C17 and C19 lines, with many of the same saddles being marketed for both road and mountain cyclists. The C13 line is the narrowest and replaces the steel rails found on the other lines with a set of carbon rails. The C19 line is the widest, making it ideal for urban bikes with a relaxed geometry. The B17 line is Brooks’ original line of leather saddles, from which are derived several modified variants. The B17 S is designed specifically for women, as it offers a slightly shorter nose. The Team Pro, derived from the B17, is a similar width but a shallower top and large hand-hammered copper rivets. Brooks also makes variants of each of these saddle lines with coil springs to help further reduce vibration. This is especially important for leather touring saddles, since leather doesn’t eliminate vibration to quite the same degree as cambium. Many of Brooks saddles are available in different colours as well, which is perfect if aesthetics is part of the appeal of upgrading to a Brooks seat. Most leather saddles are available in black, brown or beige.
