Bike grips

What kind of bike grips are there?

There are two main types of bicycle grips. At the more basic (and more economical) end of the scale, a slide-on bike grip is essentially a simple rubber or silicone tube that fits over the handlebars. The slide-on style is pushed and pulled over your handle bars manually, often with some kind of sticky lubrication to make pushing them on a bit easier. They can be very difficult to remove once in place, and, as they are not fixed by anything, they can slip under wet conditions or rough terrain.

Lock-on grips are instead integrated with collars that are fixed on via metal rings that act as a clamp. Once they are screwed on, the grips won’t shift position, and what’s more, they are easy to remove, as you can simply unscrew the rings. Just like with the other bike products, bike grips can be made from many materials that are well suited to different conditions and situations. Common materials used include:

  • Silicone – a material that is easy to clean, silicon bike grips offer excellent wet or dry grip for greater comfort
  • Aluminium – this lightweight material is often combined with other materials, such as silicone, rubber or leather to give a stable, easy grip
  • Leather - leather is a classic material that has durable properties that makes it convenient to use on bicycle handles. Looks great with classic or vintage models too
  • Rubber – rubber is not as sensitive to heat or moisture and you can therefore maintain a good grip even if your palms get sweaty. As it also has water-repellent properties, you can maintain a good grip even in wet conditions

The texture of the different bike grips also varies from soft to hard with varying textures and ridges that are designed to help with your comfort and grip.

Wherever you go, make sure you have treated your ride to the right bike grips
