You can still find threaded steerer tubes on older bicycles or modern bikes with classic styling. Threaded headsets are pressed into the head tube of the bike and then attach to the threads on the fork steerer tube. A lock nut holds everything together and is adjusted to stop play in the bearing cups. The bearing shell and lock nut can be adjusted and tightened with a spanner. Headsets can last a long time if treated well and greased regularly, they have to be replaced at some point.
