Shimano is one of the best-known companies in the cycling world. This Japanese manufacturer is responsible for making the vast majority of components on road, gravel, and mountain bikes. That includes just about everything on your bike:brakes, shifters, cassettes, pedals, wheels, and more.If you’re looking to replace some of your bike’s worn-out components or customiseyour ride, Shimano has the parts you need.
In order to understand Shimano’s parts, it’s important to recognise how the company organises its manufacturing. The company offers separate tiers of components, known as groupsets, for road, mountain, touring/city and gravel bikes. Within a groupset, you’ll find all the parts needed to build a drivetrain, as well as brakes, shifters, wheels, hubs, and pedals. Essentially, Shimano groupsets include almost everything you need to make your bike move.Cheaper groupsets provide a good value for riders on a budget. They’re typically made with thicker materials, which makes them somewhat heavy. Low-levelgroupsets are also machined to a greater tolerance, meaning that you might notexperience the same quality of shifting or efficiency as you would with a more premium component. On the other end of the spectrum, Shimano’s high-end groupsets are expensive, but lightweight and precisely machined. These components are trusted by professional cyclists and racers around the world.Note that all the parts on a bike don’t need to be from the same Shimano groupset. Some riders like to buy high-end brakes and shifters but opt for a mid-tier cassette since this saves money and won’t need to be replaced as quickly.
Shimano Road Groupsets
For road bikes, Shimano offers six different groupsets:
Claris, Sora, and Tiagra components are ideal for budget road bikes and urban commuters. The 105 and Ultegra groupsets are commonly used for mid-tier roadbikes, as they provide excellent performance at affordable prices. Dura-Ace partsare Shimano’s lightest and most high-performance components, routinely used by road racers as well as serious recreational riders.
Shimano Mountain Bike Groupsets
Shimano offers another six groupsets that are specific to the needs of mountainbikers:
The Acera and Alivio groupsets are designed for entry-level mountain bikes. The Deore and SLX components are favoured by a wide range of mountain bikers, including recreational cross-country and all-mountain riders. Shimano XT and XTR mountain bike parts are used by enduro and downhill racers, but can also be suitable for riders who spend long days on the trail and need maximum performance from their bikes.
Shimano Gravel Groupsets
Shimano doesn’t have quite as full a lineup of groupsets for gravel riders. But, thecompany’s GRX groupset includes three different sub-tiers to balance performanceand price. Importantly, GRX components are highly versatile, giving you the option to run a 1x or 2x chainring, wide range derailleurs, and disc brakes on your gravel bike.
