Cyclocross Tyres

Cyclocross biking is becoming more and more popular. CX bikes look somewhat like a racing bike but are used on the road. The big difference between a Cyclocross bike and a true racing bike is in the frame. The former has a wider clearance and larger tyres to counteract the debris that can accumulate from riding on the outdoor terrain.

 Cyclocross Tyres

This means that cyclocross tyres are very important in providing a good biking experience. At Bikester, we're here to help and offer many different cyclocross tyre options. We even have a cyclocross bike frame calculator to make sure you're getting the right size.

What are Cyclocross Tyres?

Though all bike tyres have some form of traction, CX tyres have the most. This is because this type of tyre has been designed to ensure there is traction even in the worst weather conditions. This means that they are a slightly different shape to other tyres.

In fact, these tyres sit somewhere in the middle — between wide, tread-heavy mountain bike tyres and thin, slick road tyres. By marrying the best features of these two tyre types together, the result is a tyre that gives great rolling speed while at the same time providing off-road all-weather traction.

Cyclocross tyres generally come at a standard size of 700c and can range from 30 to 38c. It's possible to find CX tyres that have a deeper tread, but these are more specific for rougher terrain. Thinner tyres are better for speed on smoother surfaces.

Traction Heavy

For rougher terrains, clincher cyclocross tyres are often the best option. These tyres provide more traction preventing Cube cyclocross bikes and others from slipping. Additionally, clinchers have more outside tread to them which enables them to provide more grip and stability all around.

Folding tyres also offer great purchase on the ground and come from a number of different brands includmg Orbea cyclocross bikes. Unlike a clincher though, this type of open tubular tyre is a lot more comfortable. In recent years, this type of tyre tends to perform better under intense riding as well as extreme conditions. It is the perfect option for improving and increasing control while navigating more muddy terrain.

Going tubeless

In recent years, tubeless tyres are also becoming increasingly popular. These can be found in a range of different options, but the main selling point is that these tubeless tyres help to prevent punctures. For those on Bombtrack cyclocross bikes or other brands looking to improve times when riding, this type of tyre can be invaluable.

These tyres tend to have specifically designed knobs in the tread that are well-spaced enabling the tyre to actually self-clean when riding in muddy conditions. However, there's also the ability to roll efficiently which is in direct contrast to the ride that a slick tyre would produce.
