Special tyres for e-bikes
E-bikes or pedelecs with electric support up to 25 km/h (15 mph) can in principle use all regular bike tyres. However, due to the higher average speeds and weight, somewhat wider, more-robust tyres are recommended. E-bike specific tyres offer extra puncture protection, control and comfort but weigh a bit more. The e-bike motor easily compensates for the additional weight though. The tyres offered here all have a Europe-wide ECE-R75 approval and usable with all e-bikes.

E-bike Tyres for Every Ride

E-bike Tyres

Just like for traditional bikes, your choice of tyres makes a huge difference in how your e-bike handles, the types of terrain you can take it on, and how frequently you’ll experience flats. Not every tyre is built to handle the forces that e-bikes are capable of putting on the rubber, which is why it’s essential to do your research when choosing e-bike tyres. At bikester.co.uk, we carry a wide variety of tyres designed for electric bikes so you can outfit your e-bike to hit the road or trail.

Why Do You Need Specialised E-bike Tyres?

E-bikes can travel at high speeds for far longer distances than the average cyclist on a non-motorised bike. As a result, e-bike tyres are subject to extra wear and tear and pressure when hitting bumps on the road. For e-bikes that are limited to speeds less than 25 km/h, e-bike tyres are a lot like standard bicycle tyres. Most manufacturers include slightly thicker casings to protect the tyre, but many standard tyres are also suitable for use on these low-speed e-bikes. If your e-bike is capable of speeds up to 50 km/h, dedicated e-bike tyres are essential. Most tyres suitable for low-speed e-bikes aren’t safe on these high-speed bikes, so you’ll need to look at tyres specifically designed for these fast, motorised rides.

How to Choose E-bike Tyres

It can seem like there are as many choices for e-bike tyres as there are for e-bikes themselves. While that choice gives you a lot of flexibility to customise and optimise your bike for different types of riding, it can also feel overwhelming. Here, we’ll guide you through the factors you need to consider when choosing a set of e-bike tyres.

Tyre Style

Depending on whether you’re riding on smooth country roads or on gravel or off-road trails, you’ll need tyres with different tread designs. E-bike tyres for road and city riding typically feature tiny lugs to give you better traction on wet roads. While you can get truly smooth tyres for riding on flat roads, keep in mind that these won’t offer much traction when the road is wet or when you’re riding over loose debris. Tyres for e-gravel and e-mountain bikes are built with much knobbier surfaces, featuring thick lugs or deep channels for gripping mud and dirt. Different tyres are more suitable for different styles of mountain biking, so keep that in mind when looking at tread designs.

Wheel Diameter

Road, city, and mountain e-bikes use a variety of wheel diameters, so it’s important to match the size of your tyre to that of your wheel. 28” rim diameters are most commonly used for road and urban e-bikes, while e-mountain bikes typically use either 27.5” or 29” wheels and tyres (note that 29” and 28” actually use the same rim diameter).

Clincher vs. Tubeless Tyres

Another big decision you’ll need to make is whether you want standard clincher tyres or tubeless tyres for your e-bike. Clincher and related folding tyres require an inner tube, which can be easily replaced on the road or trail if you get a flat. Tubeless tyres are less prone to flatting and allow you to get better traction since you can run your tyres at lower pressures. However, it can be much harder to fix a flat away from home. Keep in mind that your wheels also dictate whether you can use clincher or tubeless tyres. If your wheels are not tubeless-ready, you’ll need to stick to clincher tyres for your e-bike or change your wheelset.
