The company was established in 1921 by 26-year-old Shozaburo Shimano in Higashi Minato in Sakai City. The 40 square metre factory, known as Shimano Iron Works, specialised in the invention and production of free wheels. By the 1950s, Shimano was producing external and internal speed changers, and by 1961, the company had established branches across the globe and had presented the 3-speed hub in New York City. In 1973 the Shimano Racing Team was launched and by 1991, they had developed racing shoes and mountain bike racing components for professional racers.
