Suunto was founded in Finland in 1936 when championship-level orienteer and keen outdoor enthusiast Tuomas Vohlonen invented the mass production method for the liquid filled compass. The company is dedicated to equipping adventurers and sports enthusiasts with the best tools
for discovering and exploring new territories: from the highest mountain peaks to the deepest ocean floor (and everything in between). Most of Suunto’s products are designed and manufactured just outside of Helsinki.
Suunto is a fitness company from Finland that produces watches used when working out, amongst other products. The watch has Google Wear OS built in, which makes it very versatile to use by the runner. Many fitness watches look flashy and are very obvious, but most of us like to have a watch that looks inconspicuous and subtle, for use in everyday life in addition to exercise. It is also preferable to have a watch not only for workouts but for other activities as well, all while managing daily tasks on it. This everyday use is where Suunto has its brilliance. It's a great choice for the everyday athlete, with lots of specs for activities and a good user interface for daily life.
Design and display
The design is very stylish on Suunto. It feels light on the wrist and is perfect for everyday use. Robust construction ensures that your watch looks good at every moment. The screen is large and bright, but at the same time, the watch looks slim and natural in size. Suunto is available in many colours, from deep black to a white and burgundy blend. It feels like a premium watch and has the look of it too. Gorilla Glass gives the AMOLED screen a roughness that can take a hit or two... or five! The high resolution lets you easily read off the screen messages or data in pitch-black night or sunshine.
What is truly unique and interesting with Suunto is its pioneering heatmap. This map will tell you where the fitness community is most active. This gives you information on where you can find people doing activities similar to you, like runners, walkers, skiers, golfers and cyclists. The heatmap updates every time you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. This is done automatically and can easily be done while charging the device. You can be updated on where a potential running mate is located at all times! An important note about this is that the information is not personal; it only shows activity as a general concentration on the heatmap. The feature can also be turned off for your privacy. Most Suunto smartwatches include heart rate monitoring capabiltiies
Screen and use
The touchscreen is smooth and easy to use, and there is a home button that takes you to the home screen where you can navigate between your different options seamlessly. To preserve the battery, the screen switches off during non-activity and other times in the day when you are busy doing something. Despite this, it is very sensitive and turns on if you shake your wrist a little. Alternatively, you can just as easily turn it on by using the manual buttons. The manual buttons are also the best way to use the watch when you are in the middle of an activity, as the screen is programmed to stay black while you're working out. All in all, we can safely recommend this sleek Suunto watch to any person who wants to work out and look damn good!
