Dirt Bikes

Dirt Bikes for Action and Tricks

Dirt or dirt jump bikes are designed with a very different purpose in mind than most other types of bicycles. Rather than riding long-distance routes or rocketing down mountain trails, dirt bikes are designed for launching you and your bike into the air and doing tricks.

What Makes Dirt Bikes Different?

Dirt bikes have a unique design that makes them suited to being thrown into the air and for whipping into flips and tricks. The frames are incredibly compact, with the saddle sitting just above the rear wheel. In addition, the top tube is angled sharply downward so that riders reach upwards towards the flat handlebars. On top of that, dirt bikes are built to handle rough landings. Dirt bike frames are constructed from durable aluminium or steel that can handle repeated impacts on hard ground. To help you land, the wheels are wide and the front fork is loaded with a full suspension system. Finally, don’t expect any complex gearing on a dirt bike. Most dirt bikes use a single-speed drivetrain for the ultimate in simplicity.

Choosing the Right Dirt Bike for Your Style

There are different styles of dirt biking – pump track, street and dirt jump – and each place slightly different requirements on your bike. It’s important to bear in mind how you plan to use your bike when choosing the features you need.

Frame Material

Dirt bike frames are typically made of aluminium or steel, since both materials are durable enough to handle the shock of multiple failed landings. Aluminium frames are lighter, making it easier to launch yourself into the air for dirt jump riding. On the other hand, many riders appreciate the subtle extra flex and desirable ride feel that a steel frame offers, especially if you’re harder on your bikes when landing.

Suspension System

The suspension system on the front fork is a critical component on any dirt bike. While most dirt bikes offer 100 mm of travel on the suspension, some models offer up to 120 mm for even greater shock absorption. When choosing a suspension system, keep in mind that a larger suspension system will add weight and be noticeably stiffer.

Gearing

New dirt bikes almost universally come with a single-speed drivetrain. This means low maintenance, lower weight and great simplicity. However, you can get more versatility out of your dirt bike by choosing a model that allows gears to be added to the hub after buying. Having the option to modify the drivetrain can be a major advantage if you plan to switch between different types of dirt biking.
