The Crankbrothers system for the MBT, especially if you drive in spring and autumn, is worlds better than the SPD, since the pedal, dirt and snow fail the "whistling broom".
Unfortunately, cleats never last a lifetime. I finally had to change in the 4th season. Brass is relatively soft!
