What is a road bike?

Road bikes are designed for use on paved surfaces. They typically feature a sloping top tube and a short seatpost, made from carbon or, in cheaper versions, a combination of carbon, aluminium and steel. The wheels of road bikes generally have deep rims and fewer spokes than mountain bikes, making them lighter.

Road bikes can also include gravel bikes (which have wider tyres and bigger frames and are better for riding in forests and rough terrain), cyclocross bikes (for racing, with thin tyres and aggressive geometry) and triathlon bikes (aerodynamic for optimal racing performance).
