E-BIKE SPECIFIC ATTACHMENTS TO PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR BIKE

E-bikes make it possible to cover longer distances at higher speeds. Parts and attachments consequently wear at a faster pace than normal bikes. Specific e-bike attachments are available that are designed to endure more stress and strain than normal parts. Such parts are marked accordingly and you’ll easily be able to tell that these parts are designed for the higher demands of a Pedelec or S-Pedelec.

You’ll find everything you need to equip your e-bike with suitable parts or replace worn parts here: E-Bike Parts .

E-BIKE LIGHTING

Often bike lighting is powered by a hub dynamo with an AC voltage of 6 V. For many e-bikes, a hub dynamo is superfluous because the battery can provide electricity for both the engine and lighting system. It should be noted that the e-bike battery delivers a different current than normal bike batteries. Furthermore, it’s also important to know that batteries from different manufacturers also provide different voltages (for e.g. 24 V, 36 V, 48 V). As a result, you can’t mount just any e-bike lamp to your bike. Manufacturers indicate exactly which of their bicycle lamps can be connected to which battery.

With power from the bike battery, the bike lights deliver a consistent beam. The front and rear lights are operated via the electronic display mounted on the handlebars. LED lights are the most effective form of lighting. They consume less power, shine extremely brightly and are more durable.

WHAT ARE THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR USING ACTIVE LIGHTING SYSTEMS ON E-BIKES?
  • Power can be supplied by batteries, rechargeable batteries and dynamos
  • To avoid major trouble with the law (and to stay safe), a white light must be showing from the front of your bike and a red light from the rear
  • Daytime running lights, main beam and brake lights are allowed
  • Bike lights do not need to be fixed but must be mounted if visibility conditions dictate
  • Headlights must be set so that other road users are not dazzled
  • Flashing lights are allowed as long as they are both capable of emitting at least four candela
  • A maximum of 2 headlamps and 2 reflectors can be mounted
WHAT ARE THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR USING ACTIVE LIGHTING SYSTEMS ON S-PEDELECS?
  • S-pedelec riders are obliged to have lights permanently fixed to their bikes

E-BIKE TYRES

E-bikes are heavier and generally cover longer distances than normal bikes. These factors both greatly reduce the life of a normal bicycle tyre. The best-known tyre manufacturers such as Schwalbe or Continental have developed their own special e-bike tyres. You’ll recognise these tyres by looking out for notices on the sides of the tyres such as ‘E-bike ready’.

"E-BIKE READY" TYRES HAVE BETTER PUNCTURE PROTECTION

Since e-bikes aren’t required to have specific tyres, any tyre that fits on the rim can be used. We recommend an "E-bike ready" tyre, as these offer better puncture protection.

E-bikes are available for the city, the road, for long-range travel and off-road. The e-bike tyre should be selected to suit the terrain you’ll be crossing and air pressure should be checked regularly. This keeps the rolling resistance as low as possible and protects the tyre. The optimal tyre pressure for your tyre can be found on the side of the tyre.

S-PEDELECS NEED TYRES WITH SPECIFIC MARKINGS

S-Pedelec e-bikes require specific tyres. Only tyres with the "ECE-R75" mark are valid throughout Europe, and the tyre must be entered in the data sheet of the S-Pedelec and can only be replaced with a similar tyre. Pay attention to the tread depth of the tyre, as it must n’t have a minimum tread depth of less than one millimeter.

E-BIKE CHAINS

The bike chain is placed under a lot of stress and pressure, as well as being exposed to the elements. E-bike chains wear at a quicker rate than normal chains because they are exposed to even greater loads which also cause wear.

Whether a chain has worn out can be checked with a chain gauge or by consulting a specialist. Should it need replacing, we advise fitting an e-bike specific chain. These are made of reinforced and sturdier materials, which make them more durable. They also provide optimal shifting performance and smoothness. E-bike chains are easily recognised by a logo or lettering on the packaging.

You’ll find a range of e-bike chains on our site E-Bike Chains .

E-BIKE CRANKS AND CHAINRINGS

The crank arms and the chainring are two essential bike attachments. These components transmit power from the legs to the chain. If these components have to be replaced, there’s a lot to consider.

On the e-bike market, various manufacturers have developed their own crank and chainring attachments. When buying new components, you should pay attention to whether both are compatible with your engine. For example, is the e-bike crank compatible with both Shimano engine and Bosch engines? It’s a similar situation with the chainrings. Bosch engines have quite small chainrings of 14 to 20 teeth. Shimano engines use larger chainrings with 34 and 38 teeth.

E-bike chainrings don’t need replacing but you can switch to a larger chainring if you require more cadence. Mountain bikers are advised to swap their cranks for smaller models since it reduces ground contact and the risk of falling.
