E-Road Bikes
E-Road bikes are perfect for riders that want to travel a bit further than they usually would, or cover a shorter distance at a higher speed. Batteries are getting smaller all the time and can fit discreetly in an oversized down tube. Coupled with road bike geometry, narrow tyres and relatively low weight and you have a bike that is begging to be ridden fast.

E-Road / Gravel Bikes

E-bikes for Road and Gravel

Whether you want to cover more ground, tackle bigger hills, or speed up your bike commute, upgrading to an electric road or gravel bike can help. E-bikes offer all the advantages of traditional road and gravel bikes, but offer an extra boost to conserve your energy and get you where you want to go faster.

Why Go Electric?

E-bike technology has come a long way in the past few years and quickly gained popularity – chances are you’ve seen an electric bike on the roads around your city. E-road and gravel bikes simply build on the already high-performance designs on the market by adding a battery-powered motor into the drivetrain. That motor confers a few big advantages that traditional bikes simply can’t match. You can configure the e-assist to give a boost every time you pedal, allowing you to go further with the same amount of leg power. That means you can cover longer distances that would be out of reach without an e-road bike. It also means that you can climb up steep hills without wearing out your legs.

Bike Commuting with an E-Road or Gravel Bike

These advantages really come into their own for bike commuters. With an electric road bike, you can cut your commute in half and show up to the office feeling refreshed rather than exhausted and sweaty. If you’re used to battling hills or rough gravel roads during your commute, having the option of e-assist can make commuting seem easy even on your most tired days.

Choosing an E-bike for Roads or Gravel

Most of the considerations that go into choosing an electric road bike or electric gravel bike are the same as those for choosing any bike. You need to make sure the frame fits your body, that the components and frame material match your riding style, and that you won’t quickly outgrow your bike as you become a more experienced cyclist. However, there are a few additional features to consider when choosing an e-bike:

Motor Style

One of the biggest differences among e-bikes is whether the motor is located in the hub of the rear wheel or beneath the front chainring. Hub-drive motors are the more common style of motor because they’re less expensive than mid-drive motors. However, hub-drive motors create a feeling of being pushed from behind when the electric assist is activated, which can take some getting used to. Mid-drive motors, on the other hand, offer a more natural riding feeling so that you won’t even notice the electric assist is there.

Battery

The battery is one of the most important components of every e-bike. Most road and gravel bikes have the battery integrated into the frame, since this is more aerodynamic – these are still performance bikes, after all. However, keep in mind that having the battery inside the frame can make it harder to access and replace the battery if you ever need to. The other important thing to consider when choosing a battery is how much power it can hold. More battery life means that you’ll be able to draw more power from the motor for a longer distance. That’s important if you ride long distances, over a lot of hills, or on gravel – you don’t want to find yourself out of juice halfway through a big ride.

Electric Assist Levels

Many e-road and e-gravel bikes allow you to select the amount of assistance that you want, and to change between assist levels easily using shifters on the handlebars. If you ride in an area with a lot of hills, you may want to choose a bike that offers a greater variety of assist levels to switch between.
