About the Brand
Castelli was started in 1876 in a modest shop in Milan by Vittore Gianni. He was a tailor who manufactured garments for dignitaries, local businesspeople, the Milan Ballet, AC Milan, and Juventus. Gianni began the transition into cycling gear by outfitting Alfredo Binda, who went on to win the Giro d'Italia five times. Armando Castelli joined the board in 1935 and eventually bought it from Gianni in 1939. Thereby expanding into cycling equipment and supplying wool jerseys and shorts to riders such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali. After working for his father, Castelli's son Maurizio split away in 1978. Thereby, developing the brand we know- castelli perfetto.
Growth
Since then, Castelli has achieved numerous industry firsts. Including being the first manufacturer to produce lycra race shorts, the first sublimated printing procedure for jerseys and shorts. Also, the first thermal winter apparel, aero skinsuit, the first to release the y-cut chamois, and the first wicking fabric therapies. The business was humming along until Maurizio died in 1995 at the age of 47 from a heart attack while climbing up the Cipressa. It is a popular climb in the Milan-San Remo.
